Marrakech : de la perle du Sud à une ville internationale
Abstract. Its image of an “oriental”, Middle-Eastern, patrimony-rich since the Unesco declared it part of the World Heritage and a “clubbing” city being quite undisputed today, Marrakech has for the last two decades been extensively transformed by a “tourism frenzy” that is becoming more and more important, that is spreading throughout the whole urban space and that is quite diverse. Marrakech, mainly thanks to its touristic nature and ambition, has gone “global”, and the city, as well as strengthening its local cultural identity, has been modified and changed since it has adopted global architectural and esthetic models, global tourism policies and work organization. It has also shown quite good examples of a successful “mixture” of different populations, architectures and crafts. The city has also succeeded in locally integrating international contemporary trends. This dynamism and this capacity to integrate and to absorb globalization has transformed Marrakech into some kind of laboratory-space, the experiments of which are conducted on mobilities, various products, social habits and behaviors and different places and locations this globalization process has modified and is still modifying. We shall try and figure out how the city of Marrakech has become such an internationally-integrated city, the urban energies and dynamics of which are determined by a dual movement, the first one being a process towards uniformity when the second one is a process towards diversity.
