Abstract. In the context of tourism globalization this paper proposes a new approach of resorts development, based on the concepts of “tourist capital” and “tourist field”. Since the trajectories of development vary, the question arises of knowing how to explain these variations and how to qualify the trajectories of resorts. We make the hypothesis that these variations can be explained by the unequal capacity of resorts (i.e. of the actors involved in the structure of local governance) to maintain or develop their tourist capital, brought into play henceforth in a global tourist field.
In order to make this hypothesis clear and to circumscribe the conditions of its validity, we proceed in three steps. First, we present the two concepts which are in the center of our explanatory model: the tourist capital and the tourist field. Secondly, we propose hypotheses on the links between the volume and the structure of the tourist capital and the trajectories of resorts development. Lastly, we show the interest of the concepts of tourist capital and tourist field for understanding the globalization of tourism.
